NEW LONDON, Conn.—Junior Ashley Dumont had a match-high ten kills leading Coast Guard to a season-opening 3-0 win (25-10, 25-3, 25-12) over Suffolk in the Bear Invitational at the Coast Guard Academy.
Sophomore Susan West added eight kills and five blocks while freshman Michelle McGill led the way with ten digs for the Bears. Junior Maggie Hine had match-high 16 assists while freshman Michelle Hernandez finished with 13 assists for Coast Guard.
Freshman Megan Correia led Suffolk with 12 digs.
Coast Guard jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first set and led 15-9 before scoring ten of the final 11 points for the 25-10 win. Dumont had six kills on seven attacks in the opening set
In the second set, behind the serving of junior Maggie Hine, the Bears scored the first 11 points as Hine had a pair of aces and the Bears cruised to a 25-3 win. Coast Guard led 13-3 and scored the final 12 points with junior Emily Gilland serving.
Coast Guard closed out the match with a 25-12 win in the third set as the Bears led 10-4 and scored seven of the final ten points for the 25-12 win.
In the thrilling opening match of the night, Montclair State beat Colby-Sawyer 3-1 (26-24, 19-25, 25-19, 30-28).
Madison Maute and Courtney Matlock each had ten kills to lead Montclair State while Lily Scanzillo had a match high 22 digs. Melissa Terpstra and Angela Campo each added 13 digs in the win. Angela Campo had a team-high 25 assists for Montclair State.
Jackie Keating had a match-high 20 kills while Stephanie Vecchio added 14 kills in the loss. Lexi Strong led the Chargers with 19 digs while Kelsey Sullivan finished with 14 digs. Laura Smolinski had a match-high 41 assists for Colby Sawyer.
The four teams will each play two matches on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. in the second and final day of the Bear Invitational.
