Bears Roar to Pair of Wins to Remain Unbeaten

NEW LONDON, Conn.— Coast Guard won a pair of matches at its own Bear Invitational beating Colby-Sawyer and Montclair State to remain unbeaten on the young season.

It is the first time the Bears have started 3-0 since the 2009 season when the team won its first 11 matches.

The Bears closed the tournament with a 3-0 win (26-24, 25-15, 25-18 over Montclair State, in the battle of tournament unbeatens.

Coast Guard also beat Colby Sawyer 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-20) in its first match of the day.

RECAPS OF TODAY'S FOUR MATCHES

COLBY-SAWYER 3, SUFFOLK 0
In the first match of the day Jackie Keating had 13 kills and ten digs leading Colby-Sawyer to a 3-0 win (25-9, 25-13, 25-15) win over Suffolk. Laura Smolinski had a match-high 33 assists while Lexi Strong had a match-high 12 digs in the win for the Chargers.

Krista Iacobucci led the Rams with 11 digs while Glamarys Sierra had ten assists and nine digs.

COAST GUARD 3, COLBY-SAWYER 0
Junior Ashley Dumont had ten kills while freshman Michelle McGill had a match-high 26 digs leading Coast Guard to a 3-0 win over Colby Sawyer. Junior Maggie Hine led the Bears with 19 assists while freshman Michelle Hernandez added 14 assists in the win. Sophomore Michaela McKeown had three aces to lead the Bears.

Stephanie Vecchio had a match-high 12 kills to lead Colby-Sawyer while Lexi Strong had 17 digs and Jackie Keating 14 digs for the Chargers. Laura Smolinski led the way with 26 assists in the loss.

In the opening set, Coast Guard scored seven straight to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 9-3 lead and the Bears scored the final six points for a 25-14 win.

The Bears used a 6-1 spurt to open up a 19-12 lead in game two before winning 25-16.

The Chargers (1-2) scored the first four points of the third set before Coast Guard ran off nine straight with McGill serving for a 9-4 lead. The Bears maintained the margin and led 19-13 before Colby Sawyer ran off seven of the next eight to tie it 20-20. Coast Guard would score the final five points to win the match 25-20.

MONTCLAIR STATE 3, SUFFOLK 0
Erika Gerner had a match-high 10 kills to go with three aces leading Montclair State to a 3-0 (25-12, 25-21, 25-13) win over Suffolk. Lily Scanzillo led the way with 12 digs, Jenifer Ramirez added 10 digs while Angela Campo led the way with 17 assists.

Krista Iacobucci led Suffolk (0-3) with five kills and ten digs while Jane Buckley added four kills for the Rams.

COAST GUARD 3, MONTCLAIR STATE 0
Sophomore Susan West had 12 kills while Dumont added ten kills leading the Bears to a 3-0 win over Montclair (26-24, 25-16, 25-18).

McGill finished with a team-high ten digs to go with three aces while Hine led the way with 19 assists and freshman Summer Adams added three aces.

Courtney Matlock led Montclair with seven kills while Melissa Terpstra had a match-high 14 digs and Lily Scanzillo finished with 13 digs. Angela Campo had a team-high 18 assists in the loss for Montclair State (2-1).

Coast Guard jumped out to a 13-3 in the opening set before Montclair State ran off nine straight to cut the deficit to 13-12. The Bears led 24-21 before the Red Hawks ran off three straight to tie it 24-24. Sophomore Susan West would record back-to-back kills to give the Bears a 26-24 win in the opener.

The Bears led 15-11 in the second set before scoring seven of the next nine points to take a 22-13 lead before winning 25-16.

In the third set, Coast Guard led 8-3 and never looked back winning 25-18 to clinch the match.  

The Bears are off for the week before competing at the Brandeis Invitational next weekend. They will play two matches on Friday (Brandeis and Trinity) and two more on Saturday (Wesleyan and Williams).
