CORTLAND, N.Y. - Coast Guard started off the season 1-1 with a straight set victory over Buffalo State and falling in straight set to Nazareth at day one of the Cortland Red Dragon Classic in Cortland New York.
Match One: Coast Guard (1-0) 3 Buffalo State (0-1) 0 (25-20, 25-10, 25-13)
Freshman Angelou Dunton had a match high nine kills leading the Bears to the opening season win over the Bengals.
Senior Susan West hit at a .400 clip with eight kills and seven digs while Junior Emma Saunders added eight kills. Sophomore Hailye Reynolds had a match high 29 assists and five digs while junior Michelle McGill chipped in 10 digs and four assists.
Buffalo State was led junior Riley Chapman who had four kills while sophomore Victoria Rigler and sophomore Kayla Higgins had eight and seven digs respectively. Freshman Meg Brandon tallied a team high eight assists.
Match Two: Nazareth (2-0) 3 Coast Guard (1-1) 0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-21)
For the second match in a row Dunton led the team with 10 kills but was not enough as the Bears were swept in straight set by the Golden Flyers.
Dunton had 14 digs to go along with her 10 kills while junior Madison Scott hit .364 with five kills. Reynolds had a match and career high 35 assists and added 11 digs while McGill, West and freshman Ali Gates had 10, nine and nine digs respectively.
Nazareth was led by senior Cady Messmer who had a match high 16 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore Celia Cordero had 26 digs while senior Maureen Thayer had 29 assists and 10 digs.
Coast Guard is back in action on the final day of the Cortland Red Dragon Classic with matches against Lebanon Valley (11:00 am) and Rochester (1:30).
