SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- Sophomore Angelou Dunton had a match-high 17 kills to go with eight digs leading Coast Guard to a 3-1 win over host Mount Holyoke a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match.
The Bears won by game scores of 25-13, 25-23, 24-26, 25-14 to improve to 8-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play. The Bears have won six of their last seven this season. Mount Holyoke dropped to 4-4 overall and 0-3 in the NEWMAC.
Freshman Bridget Boyle hit a team-high .393 and added 14 kills while sophomore Alexi Deane finished with 10 kills for Coast Guard.
Sophomore Makenna Martin had a match-high 28 assists and six aces for the Bears while senior Michelle McGill led the Bears with 10 digs to go with four aces in the win.
Coast Guard had an 8-6 lead in the opening game before running off eight straight with three service aces from Martin in the run for a commanding 16-6 lead en route to a 25-13 win.
In the second game, the Bears used a 5-1 run turning a 10-9 lead into a 15-10 advantage. The Lyons would close the gap to 18-16 before Coast Guard ran off three straight for a 21-16 lead and the Bears held on for the 25-23 win.
Mount Holyoke scored five straight to take a 14-10 lead in the third game. The Bears would score four of the next five cutting the deficit to 15-14 before the Lyons answered right back with a 4-1 run of their own for a 19-15 edge. Coast Guard would fight back and have match point before the Lyons ran off three straight for the 26-24 win.
Coast Guard fell behind 5-4 in the fourth before the Bears scored 10 of the next 11 with McGill adding a pair of aces taking a comfortable 14-6 lead and the Bears closed out the match with a 25-14 win
The Bears are back in action on Thursday when they travel to archrival Merchant Marine for a 6:00 match.
