HOBOKEN, N.J. – On day one of the Duck Classic the Coast Guard women's volleyball team split their first two matches, topping Montclair State 3-1 and falling to host Stevens 3-0.
Coast Guard 3 Montclair State 1 (30-28, 23-25, 25-21, 25-15)
Freshman Bridget Boyle had 19 kills with 10 digs as the Bears topped the Red Hawks 3-1 in their opening match at the Ducks Classic hosted by Stevens.
With the win, Coast Guard improves to 13-7 while Montclair State falls to 10-10.
Sophomore Alex Kempf hit a team .375 with nine kills while classmates Alexi Deane and Angelou Dunton each had nine kills as well. Senior Michelle McGill had a team high 16 digs whiles sophomore Makenna Martine and freshman Veronica Hine had 22 and 20 assists respectively.
Junior Natalia Majkut and sophomore Schyler White paced the Red Hawks with 10 kills each while sophomore Jillian Wilson had eight kills and five digs. Junior Ashley Griffith had a match high 26 assists and senior Lily Scanzillo finished with 20 digs.
The first set pushed both teams to the limit as Coast Guard finally took it 30-28. The Bears hit .209 as a team and Kempf finished off the set with a kill and a block.
After Montclair State took a close second set 25-23 they nearly mounted a comeback in the third closing a Bears nine point advantage to just three at 23-20. Coast Guard however shut the door taking two of the final three points for the 25-21.
In the fourth and final set the Bears turned it on at 10-10 going on 15-5 run to close out the match in dominating fashion winning 25-15. Coast Guard hit .500 in the fourth set and held the Red Hawks to a .091 hitting percentage.
Stevens 3 Coast Guard 0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-16)
In the Bears final match of the opening day of the Ducks Classic, host Stevens topped the Bears in straight sets.
With the loss, Coast Guard fall to 13-8 on the season while the Ducks improve to 18-6.
Deane led the Bears with nine kills while McGill had a team high 12 digs. Dunton notched seven kills and nine digs and Martin had 16 assists.
Stevens was led by Shelby Stewart who had nine kills while Emily Singleton had seven kills and nine digs. Julie Greco had a match high 31 assists.
In the opening set, the Ducks pulled away as they had a two point lead at 18-16 before they rattled off the final seven points of the first set to take it 25-16.
Stevens charged out to a 19-5 lead before Coast Guard closed within six late at 23-17. The Bears could not complete the comeback as the Ducks scored the final two points for the 25-17 second set win.
It was more of the same in the final set as Stevens wrapped up the sweep with a 25-16 win.
Coast Guard is back in action tomorrow with matches against Stockton and FDU-Florham at 10:00 and 2:00.
