POTSDAM, N.Y. -- Coast Guard won a pair of matches to open the season at the North County Invitational at Clarkson University.
The Bears play two more matches tomorrow to close out the tournament at St. Lawrence. Coast Guard will play host St. Lawrence at noon and Geneseo at 2:00.
COAST GUARD 3, KEUKA 0
Sophomore Bridget Boyle and freshman Mary Sweet each had a team-high five kills as the Bears beat Keuka in straight sets 25-8, 25-17, 25-16.
Junior Mackenna Martin led the way with 13 assists to go with seven digs, freshman Nikki Sefcik added nine assists while junior Angelou Dunton had a team-high nine digs in the win.
Freshman Maddie James had three kills and team-high three blocks in her collegiate debut.
The Bears jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first game and cruised to the 25-8 win.
In game two, Coast Guard held a 16-15 lead before scoring eight of the next nine points to take control before winning 25-17.
Keuka scored the first eight points of the third game, but Coast Guard would run off nine straight later to take a 10-9 lead. It was tied 15-15 before the Bears ran off seven straight and closed out the match winning 25-16.
COAST GUARD 3, CLARKSON 2
Dunton had 17 kills, 20 digs and three aces while freshman Amanda Dake added 15 kills and 18 digs as Coast Guard outlasted host Clarkson 3-2. The Bears won by game scores of 25-20, 19-25, 25-15, 21-25, 23-21.
Martin had a team-high 37 assists and Veronica Hine led the way with 28 digs.
