Hatfield, Dake Lead Bears to Win Over Bantams

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Coast Guard women's volleyball team won their fourth match of the season topping Trinity in straight sets, 25-18, 25-19 and 25-18 Wednesday night.

With the win, the Bears improve to 4-1 while the Bantams drop their season opener and fall to 0-1. It is Coast Guard's first 4-1 start since 2015 when the Bears finished 19-10, reaching the NEWMAC quarterfinals.

Freshman Lauren Hatfield hit a career high .467 with eight kills, nine digs and three service aces. Classmate Amanda Dake had a team high nine kills and tied Hatfield and sophomore Veronica Hine with a team high nine digs. Freshman Nikki Sefcik had a team high 15 assists 

Freshman Alexandra Kelly, senior Rachel Underwood and junior Colette Scheffers all had five kills for Trinity, while sophomore Jessica Yang had a match high 19 assists with nine digs.

Coast Guard jumped out to a commanding lead in the opening set at 8-1 forcing a timeout by Trinity. Sophomore Bridget Boyle had two kills over this stretch while Hatfield had a kill and an ace.

After the timeout, the Bantams went on a 6-2 run to close within three at 10-7. Underwood led Trinity with two aces.

The Bantams cut the lead to two (13-11) before Coast Guard finished the opening set on a 12-7 run winning 25-18 to go up 1-0 on Trinity. The Bears were efficient in the opening set as they hit .312 as a team.

In the second set, it was close throughout as the Bears lead was only one point at 10-9. Coast Guard then scored four straight points for a five-point lead (14-9) as Coast Guard forced two errors by Trinity sandwiched around two aces by Hatfield.

The Bears did not allow the Bantams to get any closer than four, as freshman Mary Sweet closed out the second set with a kill, wrapping up a 25-19 win.

Coast Guard finished off their second sweep of the season, coming back from an early three-point deficit (9-6) to go ahead 13-11 and never look back on their way to the 25-18 win. The Bears had with 14 kills in the final set.

The Bears are back in action this Friday, September 7th, when they host day one of the Coast Guard / Conn. College Invitational with matches against Western Connecticut (4:00) and Maine Maritime (8:00).
