WORCESTER,Mass. – Colleen Mullens had a match-high 12 kills to go with 11 digs leading WPI to a 3-1 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.
WPI won 25-15, 25-17, 21-25, 25-21 to improve to 13-3 overall and 4-3 in the NEWMAC.
Coast Guard, which played its first of six straight road matches tonight, has dropped three straight and four of its last five to drop to 14-5 overall and 3-4 in conference play.
Freshman Mary Sweet, classmate Amanda Dake and junior Angelou Dunton each had nine kills to lead Coast Guard.
Sophomore Veronica Hine led the Bears with 23 digs while Dunton tied a career-high with 20 digs. Junior Makenna Martin had a team-high 22 assists while freshman Nikki Sefcik had a team-high three aces along with 21 assists and freshman Maddie James had a team-high four blocks.
After WPI took the first two sets in convincing fashion, Coast Guard rallied from a 16-7 deficit to force the fourth. WPI had a healthy lead once again only to see a 16-10 advantage whittled down to 17-15 following a timeout before WPI held on 25-21.
The Bears are back in action on Thursday when they play a non-conference match at Hunter at 6:00.
