NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Junior Angelou Dunton had a match-high 14 kills while freshman Amanda Dake added 13 kills and 16 digs leading Coast Guard to a 3-1 Senior Day win over Wheaton in the final regular season game of the season.
The Bears dropped the first set 25-18 before winning 25-22, 25-22, 25-22.
Coast Guard improves to 18-11 overall and 5-5 in the NEWMAC securing the #6 seed in the conference tournament and the Bears will play at #3 Babson on Tuesday night at 7:00 in the quarterfinals.
Wheaton drops to 22-9 overall and also finishes 5-5 in the conference and will be the #7 seed and play at #2 MIT in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
The Bears celebrated the final home game for their lone senior captain Mackenzie Everett, who has been a four-year member of the team and was slowed by injury this season.
Sophomore Bridget Boyle added 11 kills for the Bears while freshman Mary Sweet hit .375 with eight kills in the win. Junior Makenna Martin had a match-high 43 assists while sophomore Heather Miller recorded a career-high 16 digs.
Senior Claire Cansler hit .348 and led Wheaton with 11 kills while junior Becca Houghton had a team-high 33 assists and 14 digs for the Lyons
In the opening set Wheaton led 12-9 before the Bears scored six straight to take a 15-12 lead. The Lyons would however answer back with five straight and 11 of the next 13 points for a 23-17 lead and win 25-18.
The Bears would score six straight early in the second set for a 7-2 lead. Wheaton would close to within two at 19-17 and again at 22-20 following back-to-back aces from Hamilton. The Bears would hold on to win 25-22.
In the third set, the score was tied 16-16 before Coast Guard scored five straight capped on back-to-back aces from Dunton for a 21-16 lead. The Lyons could close to within 23-21 and the Bears won 25-22.
Coast Guard led 19-12 in the fourth before Wheaton scored eight of the next 10 to cut the deficit to 21-20. The Bear led 23-22 and closed out the match with consecutive kills by Boyle.
