Bears Split First Day of CGA/Conn. Tournament

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Coast Guard split a pair of matches on the opening night of the Coast Guard Academy/Conn. College Tournament as the Bears lost to #6 Johnson & Wales 3-0 before defeating Roger Williams, 3-0. 


Kate Walker had nine kills, and seven blocks leading Johnson & Wales, which won by game scores of 25-11, 25-20, 25-18.

Maria Coniglio added eight kills, seven digs and three blocks in the win.

Brylee Frank had a match-high 25 assists for the Wildcats.

Noelle Tursky led Coast Guard with a match-high 10 kills to go with 11 assists and six digs while Angelou Dunton and Amanda Dake each had five kills for the Bears.

Makenna Martin led Coast Guard with 14 assists while Veronica Hine had a team-high seven digs.

The Wildcats would use 10-1 run in the opening game to open up a 20-8 lead and won 25-11.

The second game was tied 11-11 before JWU ran off five straight points to open up a 16-11 lead. The Bears would later use a 4-1 spurt to close to within one at 21-20 before the Wildcats ran off the final four points to win 25-20.

In the final game, the Wildcats jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead. The Bears would get as close as 16-13, but Johnson & Wales closed out the match with a 25-18 win.

Johnson & Wales improved to 4-1 while the Bears, had their three-game win streak snapped to drop to 3-2.


Dake led the Bears with a match-high 11 kills while adding five digs and dishing out one assist as the Bears defeated Roger Williams, 25-20, 25-17, 25-11. 

Tursky added a match-high 16 assists with nine kills and seven digs and senior McKenna Martin added 15 helpers. Dunton chipped in with six kills, four digs and two assists. 

Katherine Pickard led Roger Williams with nine kills and dive digs. Lara Loiacono added seven kills for the Hawks. 

With the scored tied 8-8, the Bears used two, six point runs to take the first set 25-20. 

The Bears had a 22-14 lead in the second set as Roger Williams started chipping away to bring the Hawks within five but Coast Guard scored the final three to end the second set 25-17.

Coast Guard used a 7-0 lead in the first set to defeat Roger Williams 25-11.

The Bears are back in action with two games in the tournament tomorrow when they host DeSales at 11:00 and Tufts at 3:00.
