Women’s Cross Country tabbed fifth in inaugural preseason poll
BOSTON, Mass.-The Coast Guard women's cross country team has been voted fifth in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference inaugural preseason poll. The poll was voted on by the head coaches of each of the league's eleven member schools.
The Bears finished fifth at last year's NEWMAC Championships in what was then a ten team field. MIT grabbed the top spot – and every first place vote – in the poll, largely on the strength of 15 consecutive NEWMAC titles. Wellesley was tabbed to place second, followed by Wheaton and Smith, with Coast Guard rounding out the top five. WPI and Springfield came in at sixth and seventh, respectively, while Mount Holyoke was slotted at number eight. Babson and league-newcomer Emerson rounded out the top ten, with Clark projected to come in at number 11.
Coast Guard returns six of its seven scorers from the 2012 NEWMAC Championships. The season gets underway on September 7 when the Bears travel to take part in the Smith Invitational. The NEWMAC championship will be held on Saturday, November 2 at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass.
