NEW LONDON, Conn. – Alec Kushner and Ethan Rolland each had four hits while Garrett Greenwood and Thomas Allison homered leading MIT to a 16-4 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.
The Engineers exploded for 10 runs in the final two innings scoring four in the eighth and six m more in the ninth to blow open a 6-4 game.
MI T improves to 12-5 overall and 7-1 in the NEWMAC while the Bears drop to 6-13 overall and 0-9 in conference play.
The Bears struck first on an RBI single by Jon Pressley in the first before answered with two in the second on a two-run double by Trey Roberts.
Coast Guard pulled even in the third on an RBI double by Jeremy Lhotka before MIT scored three times in the fourth for a 5-2 lead.
In the MIT fourth, Roberts had a sacrifice fly and David Heller was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Allison hit a solo homer to left in the seventh to extend the MIT lead to 6-2.
Tom Ankers had an RBI double before Lhotka's RBI singled pulled the Bears to within 6-4 in the home half of the seventh.
Jared Schwait's two-run double highlighted the four run eighth as MIT took a 10-4 lead.
Greenwood's three-run homer to right center keyed a six run ninth.
Casey Bussone (2-1) pitched six innings and allowed five hits and two runs, one earned while walking one and fanning four to pick up the win. Tommy Hannan pitched two hitless innings to close out the game and struck out two.
Walter Harris (1-3) took the loss for the Bears. He allowed five earned runs in four innings on four hits while walking five and striking out three.
Allison also had two hits, drove in two runs and scored two runs while Roberts drove in three runs for MIT in the win.
Lhotka had three hits and two RBI's for Coast Guard.
Coast Guard is back in action on Wednesday when the Bears travel to Wesleyan at 4:00.
