NEW LONDON, Conn. -- David Larson's RBI single in the top of the 14th broke a 2-2 tie as WPI outlasted Coast Guard 6-2 in a marathon 14 inning New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game, the first of a three game weekend series.

Coast Guard led 2-1 before the Engineers tied the game on an RBI groundout by Jordan DeDonato in the ninth to force the extra innings.

WPI would break the game open with four in the 14th as following Larson's single, Josh Herland's RBI ground out before Austin Linder's two-run single made the score 6-2.

The Engineers improve to 18-10 overall and 4-5 in the NEWMAC while the Bears drop to 14-11 overall and 4-7 in conference action.

The game was a pitchers' duel between Coast Guard ace Brett Sullivan and WPI's Kyle Foley with the Engineers pushing a run across in the fourth on an RBI groundout by DeDonato for a 1-0 lead, the only run allowed by the starters.

Sullivan was outstanding once again as he pitched eight innings and allowed just three hits, an earned run, while walking one and striking out nine while Foley went 6 1/3 innings and allowed just five hits, while walking two and fanning three.

Coast Guard would take the lead in the eighth on a two-out, two-run double by Reed Jenkins before the Engineers pulled even with an unearned run in the ninth.

WPI's Kyle Wood (1-0) was fantastic out of the bullpen as he did not allow a hit over the final six innings, walked a pair of batters and struck out eight to pick up the win.

Coast Guard's Dan Finn (0-1) had a pair of scoreless innings before being touched for four in the 14th to take the loss.

Larson had three hits including a pair of doubles while Matt Howard also had three hits for WPI. Tyrone Patterson added two hits in the win for the Engineers.

Jeremy Lhotka and Dylan Roberts each had two hits including a double for Coast Guard.

The teams wrap up the three-game series on Saturday at noon at the New England Baseball Complex.
