NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Coast Guard senior kicker Cole Austin has been named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Special Teams Athlete of the Week for the second straight week for his performance in the Bears thrilling 38-35 win over Norwich to capture The Mug in the conference opener on Saturday.
Austin had big day kicking a career-high three field goals and also making the game saving tackle.
He would miss a 23-yard field goal on the Bears first possession, but he would then convert three field goals in the second quarter from 21, 33 and 39 yards to give the Bears a 9-7 lead. He would make all three PAT's in the game. His biggest moment however came after the Bears took the lead with nine seconds left on the ensuing kickoff he was part of the game saving tackle at the Bear 38 to preserve the win.
Austin leads the NEWMAC with eight field goals, he had made eight of nine this season and is 10 of 11 on extra point attempts.
Coast Guard is off to a 3-1 start for the second straight season and the sixth time in the last 30 years.
The Bears will take their longest road trip of the season this week as they head to Washington, D.C. to take on Catholic at 1:00.
