Bears Fall to Baruch in Western Conn. Classic

DANBURY, Conn. –  Sean Donnellan had a team-high 17 points leading Baruch to a 65-58 win over Coast Guard at the Western Connecticut Classic.

Baruch, the defending CUNYAC champions, who went 22-6 last season, evens its record at 1-1 on the season while the Bears drop to 1-2.

Coast Guard shot just 32.4 percent from the floor (23 of 71) and made 8 of 29 from 3-point range while Baruch shot 40.7 percent from the field (22 of 54) while connecting on 8 of 15 from beyond the arc in the win. Baruch outrebounded the Bears 51-36, each team had 18 offensive rebounds.

Justin Kane led Coast Guard with a season-high 19 points and team-high eight rebounds while Tyler Perez finished with a season-high 18 points and five rebounds in the loss for Coast Guard. Noah Baldez added eight points, six rebounds and a team-high four assists.

Coast Guard jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first three minutes on a 3-pointer by Packy Witkowski and a pair of treys by Kane.

Baruch answered with 12 straight points to start an 18-1 run as the Bearcats opened up an 18-10 lead with 8:51 left in the half.

The Bears would score six straight to tie the game 25-25 with 2:38 left in the half. Baruch led 29-26 at halftime.

Perez hit a 3-pointer for Coast Guard to cut the deficit to 52-51 with 7:47 left, but the Bears would miss their next nine field goal attempts and the Bearcats scored seven straight to push the lead to 59-51.

Perez would make a trey with 3:15 left to end the drought making the score 59-54, but Baruch would make five of six free throws to put the game away pushing the lead to 64-54 with 1:40 left.

The Bears are back in action on Sunday afternoon at 4:00 when they take on the host Colonials.
