NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Greg Burnham scored a pair of goals as Coast Guard exploded for all four goals in the second half to win its third straight beating Newbury 4-0 in a non-conference game.
The Bears improve to 4-5-2 overall Newbury had its five game winning streak snapped and dropped to 6-3-1 on the season.
Coast Guard outshot Newbury 10-4 in the first half and had several good looks but came up empty until the Bears scored off a corner kick in the 68th minute as sophomore Dan Taglinetti served a ball which Burham headed home giving the Bears a 1-0 lead.
The Bears were not done as they would add three goals in less than five minutes started with freshman Robbie Fugett's header off a corner from senior Patrick Palermo-Re in the 74th minute.
Burnham would strike again just 2:29 later with Taglinetti and sophomore Seth Anderson assisting giving Coast Guard a 3-0 lead.
Senior Griffin Klages closed the scoring with his first goal of the season with Palermo-Re adding his second assist of the night in the 79th minute.
Coast Guard outshot the Nighthawks 23-9 and junior Dakota Harich (3-4-1) made three saves in just under 82 minutes to pick up the win. Sophomore James Morrison made his first career appearance in goal and made a save in the final 8:02.
It was the third straight shutout win for Coast Guard, which has outscored its opponents 8-0 in the three win. The Bears scored just four goals in the first eight games of the season and were shutout three straight times before the winning streak started.
Coast Guard is back in action on Saturday when the Bears host Clark in a NEWMAC game at 11:30 a.m.
