NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Landon Klopfenstein's first goal of the season proved to be the game winner as Coast Guard beat Mass. Maritime 3-2 in a non-conference game and the final home game of the regular season.
The Bears improve to 5-7-3 overall while the Bucs drop to 4-9-1 on the season.
Senior Patrick Palermo-Re got the Bears on the board in the 9th minute with an unassisted goal.
The Buccaneers would pull even in the 13th minute when sophomore AJ Bubencik scored and senior Brendan Gawron assisted.
Coast Guard took the lead for good on a header by sophomore Noa Pagatpatan off a corner kick from freshman Robbie Fugett in the 33rd minute.
The Bears would add one more goal before the half again off a corner kick with Klopfenstein finishing off a scramble in front of the goal at 36:06 for a 3-1 lead.
Mass. Maritime would pull to within 3-2 with just 53 seconds left when sophomore Jacob Crawford scored with Gawron again adding the assist.
Senior William Bragaw (2-1-1) played the first half in goal and made three saves to get the win while sophomore James Morrison had a pair of second half saves for the Bears.
Senior Connor Murphy (3-4) took the loss allowing three first half goals with two saves while freshman Mitch Hardy played the second half and made four saves for the Bucs.
Coast Guard outshot Mass. Maritime 21-13 in the win.
The Bears are now 4-0-1 in the last five meetings between the two schools and hold a 24-1-3 record in the all-time series.
Coast Guard is back in action on Friday night in a key NEWMAC game at MIT at 7:00.
