Four Bears Earn USTFCCCA All-Region Honors

NEW LONDON, Conn.- Four athletes were selected for All-Region honors for the 2019 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field season, announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) following the conclusion of the regular season.

Top-5 individuals in each event from each region earned All-Region honors.

A total of 1915 honors were handed out to athletes from USTFCCCA member institutions, which included a near-even split between men's (951) and women's programs (964).

Junior Ben Zarlengo earns the honors for both the hammer throw and discus. In the hammer throw, Zarlengo is ranked 20th with a distance of 185' (56.40m) from his third place finish at the New England Division III Championships, which is his personal best throw and a Coast Guard record. In the discus, he is ranked 21st overall with a career best throw of 163' 1" (49.72m) from a first place performance at the Silfen Invitational.

On the women's team, sophomores Kaitlyn Mooney and Leilani Salang, and freshman Ariyanna Jurkowski have all earned All-Region honors.

Mooney takes a spot on the All-Region team in the 5k where she is ranked fifth in Division III with her time of 16:49.40 coming from a first place finish in the New England Outdoor Championships, competing against athletes across all three divisions. Last year Mooney placed 10th overall in the 5K with a 17:42.76 time. During the indoor season, Mooney won the National Championship in the 5K with a time of 16:23.12, the fastest time ever recorded in Division III history.

Salang earns the honors for the discus where she is ranked fifth in Division III with a distance of 154' 10" (47.19m) coming from her first place performance at the Last Chance meet at MIT last Thursday. This was a personal best distance and a new Coast Guard record in the discus.

Jurkowski is on the All-Region team for the discus. She had a 128' 2" (39.06m) fourth place finish with her best throw of the season at the Silfen Invitational, which is a top-five perforance in the region.

Four cadet-athletes will compete at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Geneva, Ohio this weekend beginning on Thursday.

Salang will compete in the discus on Thursday at 12:30.

Zarlengo is the only Coast Guard competitor on Friday as he throws the discus at 10:45.

Adora Lawrence runs the 400 meters at 1:10 on Saturday, Zarlengo competes in the hammer at 1:45 and Mooney will run the 5,000 meters on Saturday at 3:00.
