Bears Defeat Merchant Marine and Yale in Pistol

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Bears turned the tide on Kings Point by handing them another loss this season by a score of 5873 to 5796. The Mariners from the US Merchant Marine Academy wore "Beat Coast Guard" shirts throughout the competition, but the Bears prevailed or their arch rival. The Bears started the contest with a win Friday night in Free Pistol, firing 1844 to the Mariner's 1758. The Bears also started the match Saturday morning with another victory in Air Pistol, 2077 to 2059. However, the Mariners edged out the Bears in Standard Pistol, 1979 to 1952. The Yale Pistol Team finished third in all events.

Sophomore Emily Burlison led the Bears with a combined score of 1478, firing a 519 Air Pistol, 494 Standard Pistol, and 465 Free Pistol. Freshmen Dustin Smith led the team and a personal best in Standard Pistol with a 502, while Freshmen Kevin Lennox led the team and a personal best in Free Pistol with a 474. Lennox's Free Pistol score was his personal best by over 40 points. This performance is only 20 points below an All-American average. Senior Co-Captain Hannah Cronin led the team in Air Pistol, firing a 534.

The Bear's Pistol Team will travel next week to West Point to shoot in the Collegiate Sectionals. The Sectionals are used to garner an invitation to the National Championships at Fort Benning, GA, 21-26 March 2015.
