NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Coast Guard closed the regular season with a win over the defending national champions Ohio State.

The Bears broke the Academy Standard Pistol Team Record, firing a 2190 which allowed the Bears to break ahead of the Buckeyes in the two day match. This is the second time this year that the Bears have defeated Ohio State in Shoulder-to-Shoulder competition.

Senior Helen Oh led all shooters firing a 533 in Free Pistol, but was not enough to overcome the Buckeyes and the Bears lost their first match against Ohio State, 2071 to 2075.

Scoring for the Bears were freshman Benjamin Waalkes' personal best, 525, senior Brian Kim's 518, and junior Johnny Ly's 495. The Bears evened the score by defeating the Buckeyes by two points in Air Pistol, 2222 to 2220, respectively.

Top shooter in the match was Oh's 565. Also scoring was Kim's 559, Waalkes' 552, and junior Kevin Bennett's 546.

Going into Standard Pistol, the Bears trailed the Buckeyes by only two points. Oh led all Bears with a 557 and the Bears were able to defeat the Buckeyes, 2190 to 2149.

Providing support for the record-breaking performance were Kim's 554, Waalkes' 532, and Bennett's 547. The Buckeyes' initial four point lead after Free Pistol was not enough to overcome the Bears winning ways and lost 6444 to 6483.

In the Women's Air Pistol competition, the Bears defeated Ohio State 1626 to 1552. Oh led all competitors shooting 565, followed by sophomore Esther Choe's 545, and freshman Jo St. Ledger's 516.

In Women's Sport Pistol, the Bears fired 1627 to the Buckeyes 1589. Oh again led all competitors with a 564, followed by Choe's 537, and freshman Ella Firenzi's 526.

The Bears will compete on the road at the U.S. Collegiate National Championships, in Fort Benning, Ga., March 15-20. The Bears end the season with a 12-1 record.
