NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Coast Guard beat both Army-West Point and Merchant Marine in commanding fashion. The Bears won all events against both competitors, firing an Academy record 6532 to 6177 and 5642, respectively.
Shooting Air Pistol Friday afternoon, the Bears defeated the Black Knights and Mariners, 2208 to 2100 and 1974, respectively. Firing members were freshman Chase Jin's personal best 563, sophomore Ben Waalkes, 558, senior Kevin Bennett's 550 and junior Esther Choe's 540. Firing a personal best was walk-on sophomore Samuel Kim, shooting a 517.
Saturday morning, the Bears continued their winning ways by soundly defeating the Black Knights and Mariners in Standard Pistol, 2113 to 2010 and 1847, respectively. The top scorer for the Bears was Waalkes' 549. Rounding out the winning team were Bennett's 523, senior Johnny Ly's 522, and Jin's 519.
The Bears had a commanding lead going into their last event, Sport Pistol. Competing Saturday afternoon, the Bears fired an Academy record, 2208 in this new event to defeat the Black Knights' 2067, and Mariners' 1821. Waalkes led the Bears with a 560. Rounding out the scoring team were, Choe's 536, and personal bests by Bennett's 559 and Jin's 553.
The Coast Guard women's team defeated West Point women's team in Air Pistol, 1572 to 1494. Firing members for the Bears were Choe, 540, sophomores Jo St.Ledger, 519, and Ella Firenzi, 513. In Women Sport Pistol, the Bears again defeated the Black Knights 1548 to 1487. Winning team members were Choe's 536, Firenzi's 517, and St.Ledger's 495.
The defending National Champion Bears, with a 2-1 record, will compete at home against the U.S. Naval Academy on Oct. 19th and 20th.
