Coast Guard opens its 2019-20 season with a Mid Atlantic Rifle Conference meet at Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Saturday.
The Bears were undefeated in conference competition last year and look to continue that string with a team that only lost one member to graduation.
Leading the Bears, who established new Academy records in all team events last year, are team co-captains juniors Hunter Blankenship and Seth Strayer. Both were All-conference athletes in both disciplines with Strayer, who led the conference in Smallbore, holding Academy records in individual Air Rifle and combined Aggregate score. All-conference sophomore Bryce Sturtz, who was tops in conference in Air Rifle, returns to back up the upper classmen.
Berit Bedord, Dane Harbison, and Rose Reynolds are freshman who bring a wealth of experience to the team and are expected to be impact players in this year's campaign. Fellow first year student Matt Go, a walk on, has begun training in earnest as he learns the complex skill set which is competitive rifle marksmanship.
This season Coast Guard will also face traditional conference opponents John Jay, SUNY Maritime, SUNY Plattsburg, Wentworth, and Schreiner while venturing into DI competition against our sister academies, Air Force, Army, and Navy, as well as Texas Christian University and The Ohio State University.
