Bears End Team Race Bid on a High

NEW LONDON, Conn.—Coast Guard sailed their best event of the season, but narrowly missed a qualifying position at the New England Team Race Championship for the Fowle Trophy. The team finished the event with 5 wins and 6 losses, tying four other teams for sixth place and ultimately ending in ninth after the tiebreaker was applied.

Conditions proved to be challenging throughout the weekend, allowing for the race committee to get in only one of three intended round robins. The round robin that was completed put each team in the regatta in a head to head race against every other team, with the winner being decided on most wins.

The Bears started strong and sat in 4th place overnight after half of the round robin had been completed. On Sunday, they continued their surge with a win against MIT before suffering losses against Boston College and Dartmouth College. They then won one additional race against Bowdoin College to find themselves in a four-way tie for sixth place, just two races shy of the fourth and last qualifying spot.

Despite the overall result, the Bears are taking pride in their best finish in this event in recent history and will look to carry this momentum into the next chapter of their season.

"We sailed well against the entire field this weekend," said head coach Brian Swingly. "We kept every race against teams who finished ahead of us extremely close, which made for a few heartbreaking losses right at the finish line."

Sailing for the Bears were Avery Fanning, Andrew Britton, Robert Turley, Nikole Barnes, Hannah Herring, Dana Rohde, and Anna Morin.

Yale University won the event with a record of ten wins and one loss. Boston College finished second at 8-3 and Brown University rounded out the top three at 7-4.

As this completes Coast Guard's team racing campaign the team will refocus their efforts in fleet racing. They will host their final home event of the season this upcoming weekend, the Thompson Trophy, before competing in two additional conference championships, the Women's New England Championship and the Coed New England Championship.
