Bantams Top Bears in Non-conference Action

HARTFORD, Conn. - Coast Guard softball fell to Trinity in non-conference action, 15-6 (5 innings) and 12-4 (6 innings) Tuesday afternoon on the campus of Trinity.

With the loss the Bears fall to 13-13 while the Bantams improve to 14-9.


The Bears took a 5-3 lead in the top of the second but could not hold the Bantams bats at bay as they fell 15-6 in five innings.

Freshman Courtney McKenna had a team high two RBI's going 2-3 with a double. Freshman Kayla Sowers was 1-3 with an RBI and a run scored while classmate Claire Hurley was 1-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Sharayah Simco and freshman Francesca Farlow had the teams other two RBI"s.

Sophomore Nicole Towner had a game high five RBI's for Trinity going 4-4 with a double and three runs scored. Junior Meaghan Race knocked in three RBI's while freshman Natalie Bruno went 4-4 with two RBI's. Junior Michelle Tregalia went 2-2 with two RBI's and three runs scored.

After the Bantams scored three runs in the bottom of the first the Bears answered with five in the top of the second for the early lead. Farlow got the scoring started singling to center field scoring junior Casey Cruzpino. Sowers then singled through the right side bringing Simco around to score and advancing Farlow to third. After an RBI single from Hurley, McKenna singled to center field bringing both Sowers and Hurley to finish off the scoring.

Trinity however answered with 12 runs over the next three innings to take game one 15-6.

Freshman Julia Ferris (6-8) took the game one loss allowing eight earned runs on eight hits striking out one over two and two third innings of work. Freshman Kylie Vaverek pitched an inning and a third allowing seven earned runs on eight hits.

Junior Rachael Smith (7-4) pitched a complete game for the win allowing five earned runs on seven hits and striking out one.


The Bantams took game two of the double header in six innings topping the Bears 12-4.

Junior Emma Hvozdovich went 1-3 with a home run, RBI and a run scored while sophomore Malia Hindle went 3-3 with a double and two runs scored. Simco went 2-3 with a double and an RBI and Farlow knocked in an RBI as well.

Tregalia went 3-4 with two RBI's and two runs scored while sophomore Courtney Erickson went 1-3 with a double, two RBI's and a run scored. Bruno had two RBI's as well.

Coast Guard was able to cut into the Trinity 4-0 lead in the top of the fourth as Hvozdovich hit her seventh career home run to start the scoring. Simco then hit her sixth double of the season scoring Hindle and making the score 4-2 in favor of the Bantam.

Trinity however answered the threat with five runs in the bottom of the fourth and closed out the game with one in the fifth and two in the sixth for the 12-4 six inning victory. 

Sophomore Mackenzie Everett (4-3) took the loss pitching four innings allowing eight earned runs on seven hits and struck out one. Vaverek pitched an inning and a third in relief allowing three unearned runs on three hits.

Freshman Lindsay Golia (7-4) allowed three earned runs on 10 hits and struck out two for the complete game win.

The Bears are back in action on Friday, April 14th, when they head to Cambridge, Massachusetts for a NEWMAC double header against #19 MIT. First pitch is 3:00.
