NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Smith swept at New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader from Coast Guard winning the opener 9-0 in five innings before completing the sweep with a 6-4 win in the night cap.
Smith improves to 10-20 overall and 7-9 in the NEWMAC.
The Bears drop to 16-17 overall and 3-13 in conference play.
Coast Guard closes out the season tomorrow when the Bears host Emerson in a doubleheader at noon.
GAME ONE – SMITH 9, COAST GUARD 0 (5 INNINGS)
Natalie Burchat spun a three-hit shutout walked one and struck out three while Ally Snyder was 3 for 3 with a homer leading Smith in the opener.
Smith got all they would in the first as the Pioneers scored three times before Snyder's solo homer in the third made the score 4-0.
Lydia DeAngelo's three-run double highlighted a five run fourth as the Pioneers put the game away.
Julia Ferris (9-11) took the loss for the Bears.
GAME TWO – SMITH 6, COAST GUARD 4
Smith would once again have a five-run fourth inning, this time it erased a 3-1 deficit and led the Pioneers to the sweep.
Coast Guard trailed 1-0 before scoring three runs in the third. Freshman Kayla Sowers scored on a wild pitch to tie the game before freshman Audrey Bartz's two-run single gave the Bears a 3-1 lead.
Rowan Turner's two-run double in the fourth gave Smith a 4-3 lead before the Pioneers added a pair of insurance runs for a 6-3 lead.
Coast Guard junior Emma Hvozdovich would blast a solo homer in the fifth to close the scoring.
Turner would go the distance allowing five hits and pair of earned runs in earning the win.
Ferris (10-11) worked the first four innings and took the loss.
