Sowers Records 100th Career Hit in Loss to Wheaton

NORTON, Mass.-- Junior Kayla Sowers recorded her 100th career hit in Coast Guard softball's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader setback against Wheaton on Thursday afternoon. The Bears dropped the first game, 8-5 and the second, 14-6. Coast Guard is now 18-16 overall and 6-8 in the conference.

The Bears are back in action on Saturday when they host Babson in a doubleheader at 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM as they celebrate senior day.


Junior Audrey Bartz (2-for-4) hit a three-run home run in the top of the third to lead Coast Guard with four RBI's and classmate Kayla Sowers (1-for-3) added one more run for the Bears.

Shelbi Wilson (1-for-3) and Emily Schlapak (2-for-3) both had three RBI's and Jade Assad (3-for-4) brought in two runs to lead Wheaton in the victory.

Bartz put the Bears on the board first with her three-run homer giving the Bears a 3-0 lead in the top of the third. Wilson answered to tie it up for Wheaton with a three-run home run of her own in the bottom of the third. Schlapak added another run for Wheaton in the bottom of the third with a one-run homerun to take a 4-3 lead.

The Lyons added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Assad hit a two-run double and Schlapak hit another home run to bring in two runs, extending Wheaton's lead, 8-3.

In the top of the fifth, Bartz hit an RBI single up the middle to send junior Claire Hurley home cutting the deficit, 8-4. Sowers got an RBI on a SAC fly to send Bartz home with making it, 8-5 to the final in game one.


Senior Sharayah Simco (1-for-3) and Audrey Bartz (3-for-3) brought in two runs each to lead the Bears. Sophomore Charlee Kraiss (2-for-3) and freshman Maggie Perez (1-for-3) both added one run apiece in the Bears loss. Sowers went 2-for-3 to reach her 100th career hit.

Wheaton had four players with three RBI's each in the victory.

The Bears opened with a 2-0 lead as Bartz hit and RBI single and Simco followed with an RBI double in the top of the first. Assad answered for Wheaton with a home run in the bottom of the first to cut the Bears lead in half, 2-1.

Kraiss hit an RBI double to left center to extend the Bears lead, 3-1. Bartz followed up with an RBI single to right field, giving the Bears a 4-1 advantage in the top of the second. Wheaton took the lead in the bottom of the second, scoring five runs to take a 6-4 lead.

In the bottom of the third, the Lyons added seven more runs to take a 13-4 lead.

Perez and Simco added the Bears final two runs for the Bears in the top of the fourth to cut the deficit, 13-6.

Wilson had an RBI in the bottom of the fourth, giving Wheaton the 14-6 final.
