NEW LONDON, Conn. – Babson made 33-38 free throws on their way to a 75-62 victory over Coast Guard in NEWMAC conference action.
The Beavers were led by sophomore Giovanna Pickering who had a game high 18 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Pickering was also 10-11 from the foul line. Fellow sophomore Ashley Snyder had a double-double scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
Coast Guard jumped out to a 22-11 lead following a basket by Sutherland with 10:51 left in the opening half and the Bears led by as many as 13 with the score 28-15 following a pair of free throws by senior Dani Knox with 6:42 left in the opening half.
Babson then used a 19-3 run in a span of just over five minutes which started on a 3-pointer by senior Lindsay Roche with 6:20 left and was capped on a layup sophomore Jennifer Narlee with 1:08 left as the Beavers took a 34-31 lead. Babson led 34-33 at halftime.
The Beavers used an 8-0 run midway through the second half to put the game away turning a 52-49 lead into a 60-49 edge with 8:23 left. The Bears would only get as close as eight on two occasions.
Coast Guard shot 41.8% (23-55) from the floor while going 3-16 (18.8%) from three. The Bears forced the Beavers to turn the ball over 16 times but were only able to muster 10 points from those. Coast Guard drops below .500 with an overall record of 4-5 and 1-2 in the conference.
The Beavers shot only 37.7% (20-53) from the field but was saved by the charity stripe going 33-38 (86.8%). Babson only attempted four three pointers going 50% (2-4) from beyond the arc. The Beavers lift their overall record to 6-4 on the season and to 2-1 in the NEWMAC play.
Coast Guard returns to action on Thursday, January 8th when they host Pine Manor in a non conference game. Game will tip at 7:00 pm.
