Bears Fall to Smith

Northampton, Mass.-- Coast Guard women's basketball fell to Smith College, 83-59 on Wednesday night on the road in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action. The Bears are now 5-13 overall and 4-6 in the NEWMAC, while Smith improves to 14-5 overall and 7-3 in conference play.

Freshman Kyra Hartman led the Bears with 15 points, going 5-9 from the field and 4-6 from behind the arc. Classmate Emma Puddington and sophomore Annabella Farabaugh both added 12 points each for Coast Guard.

Smith was led by Lauren Bondi with a game-high 28 points, going 11-15 from the field and 6-7 from three point range. Katy McClellan added 14 points for the Pioneers in the victory.

Smith jumped to take a 25-11 advantage in the first quarter, led by Bondi with 15 points. At 4:50 Hartman sunk a three to bring the Bears within three, 11-8 but Smith answered with a 15-3 run to finish the first quarter, 25-11.

The Pioneers opened the second quarter with a 15-2 run to increase their lead, 38-15. Smith outscored Coast Guard 25-15 in the second quarter to take a 50-26 lead at halftime.

Zoe Riis-Fallica sunk a three pointer for the Bears at 7:57 to cut the deficit 58-31 but Smith answered with a 13-3 run to extend to 71-34. Smith finished the third quarter with a 79-42 advantage.

The Bears outscored the Pioneers, 17-4 in the final quarter, led by Farabaugh with eight points. Laura Irish opened the final quarter for the Bears, sinking three free throws at 9:49 that sparked a 14-0 run as the Bears trailed, 79-56. Puddington sunk a three with 1:00 remaining, but Smith ended with the 83-59 final.

Smith shot 55.2% (32-58) from the field and 66.7% (10-15) from behind the arc. Smith also held a 36-23 advantage in rebounds.

The Bears will return home next Wednesday, January 30 at 7:00 PM against WPI.
