NEWPORT, R.I.-- Sophomore Kyra Hartman recorded her first career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead Coast Guard women's basketball to a 69-48 victory over Salve Regina on Saturday afternoon. Coast Guard starts the season 3-0 for the first time since the 2013-14 season, when the Bears started 7-0. Salve drops to 0-2 on their season.
Senior Torie Scorpio scored half of the Seahawks points the first quarter as Salve led the Bears 14-7, after the opening 10 minutes. Coast Guard opened the second quarter on an 18-0 run as they outscored Salve, 26-5 in that quarter, led by Carillo with eight of her 13 points.
A 3-pointer by senior Zoe Riis-Fallica capped an 8-0 run for Coast Guard to start the second half to mark the largest lead with 22 points, 41-19. Scorpio scored six points during an 8-0 Seahawk run which brought Salve Regina within 13, 47-34 with 1:58 left in the third quarter, its closest margin in the second half.
The teams finished the 3rd quarter even, 18-18, and the Bears added 18 more in the fourth quarter while limiting Salve to just 11 points.
Senior Breanna Wood scored all six of her points in the final quarter to extend the Bears to the 69-48 final.
Coast Guard shot 41.7% (10-24) from behind the arc and 32.4% (22-68) from the field.
The Bears are back in action on Wednesday, November 20 at 7 PM in the home opener against Trinity.
