Bears Suffer First Loss of Season in Home Opener

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Bailey Hyland was one of five Trinity players in double figures and she registered a double-double with game-highs of 16 points and 10 rebounds leading the Bantams to a 72-62 win over host Coast Guard in the Bears' home opener, a non-conference game.

Trinity improves to 2-1 on the season while Coast Guard suffered its first loss dropping to 3-1.

Bria Fuller, Katie Kirsch and Kaylen Campbell each added 12 points for Trinity while Peace Kabari finished with 10 points in the win.

Sophomores Emma Puddington and Kyra Hartman each had 14 points to lead the Bears while senior Zoe Riis-Fallica and freshman Jacqueline Ward added nine points each. Freshman Branyelle Carillo had a career-high 10 rebounds to lead the Bears.

Trinity jumped out to an 8-2 lead with 6:38 left. Coast Guard would take its first lead of the game 13-12 on a 3-pointer by Annabella Farabaugh with 2:18 left in the opening quarter. Coast Guard led 20-17 after one.

The Bears led by as many as five, 25-20 with 7:51 left, in the second quarter.  The Bantams then used a 13-2 run to open up a 33-27 lead with 2:08 remaining in the half. Trinity led 34-31 at the half.

The Bantams scored the first seven points of the third quarter starting a 13-3 run to take a 47-33 lead with 5:04 left.

Coast Guard would answer right back with 11 straight cutting the lead to 47-4 on a trey by Riis-Fallica with 3:24 remaining in the third. The Bantams led 52-47 after three.

Trinity would once again use a big run to start the quarter to take control of the game as the Bantams scored 10 of the first 11 points in the fourth to take a 62-48 lead with 6:24 left capped on a pair of layups by Kirsch.

Trinity shot 41.8 percent (28 of 67) while making 4 of 16 from 3-point range while Coast Guard was 23 of 62 (37.1 percent) and connected on 7 of 25 from behind the arc.

The Bears are back in action on Saturday when they play at Nichols at 1:00.
