BRISTOL, R.I. — Roger Williams team defeated Coast Guard women's lacrosse on Wednesday night, 8-7. The Bears fall to 1-5 on the season, while the Hawks improve to 3-2.
Sophomore Haley Howard scored two goals with three assists, and tallied three ground balls and three draw controls to lead the Bears. Classmates Haley McCue, Etta Davis, Luisa Santos, and freshman Maddie Rizzuto and Kathrine Pittman, all added a goal each in the loss.
Ashley Warren tallied a hat trick with one assist and Maeve Gillis scored a pair to lead the Hawks. Stoeppel also contributed with two points and five draw controls
Roger Williams got on the board first with an unassisted goal from Ashley Warren, seven minutes into the game. Three minutes later, Luisa Santos took an assist from Carter Sanderson to tie the game 1-1.
At the 17:45 mark, Haley Howard reached the back of the net to put the Bears in the lead, 2-1. With 12 minutes remaining in the first half, Warren found Emily Stoeppel in a player-up situation to tie the game again, 2-2.
A minute later, Maeve Gillis put one more away, to give RWU the lead. Pittman answered, tying the game 3-3 at 8:27. Howard took the lead again, 4-3 in Coast Guard's final goal of the half at 6:19 but the Hawks were able to score two more to take a 5-4 lead at the half.
Rizzuto scored her first of the game at 27:12 to open the second half to tie it, 5-5. The Hawks scored two more, giving them a 7-5 lead. At 13:28 Davis brought the Bears within one, but the Hawks answered to hold an 8-6 advantage. McCue scored the final goal of the game at 4:12 as the Bears fell to the 8-7 final.
Sophomore goalkeeper Mary Budri had a season-high, 16 saves in the Bears setback, while Lydia Nelson made four saves for the Hawks.
The Bears return home to open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday at 1:00 PM against Smith.
