KINGS POINT, N.Y.-- Merchant Marine scored six goals in the second half to surge to an 11-6 victory over Coast Guard women's lacrosse for the first time in series history on Tuesday evening. The Bears drop to 1-7 while the Mariners improve to 6-0.
Sophomore Haley Howard led the Bears with a hat trick and had a team-high four draw controls. Also adding goals for Coast Guard, freshman Maddie Rizzuto, sophomore Luisa Santos, and senior Carter Sanderson, with one goal each.
Jessie Wohner led the Mariners with six goals and Meredith Willard added a hat trick in the victory. Jessica Reilly and Maura Malone both added a goal apiece.
The Mariners put up the first two goals of the game within the first two minutes of the half. Howard tallied the Bears first goal of the game at 27:47 , sparking a four-goal run with goals from Santos, Rizzuto, and another from Howard to give the Bears a 4-2 advantage. Merchant Marine scored the next two, at 16:52 and 8:59 to tie the game 4-4. Howard scored her third of the half at 8:29 to take a 5-4 lead but the Mariners tied at 2:08 to head into halftime, 5-5.
Merchant Marine broke the tie, 6-5 to start the second half at 29:07. Sanderson scored the lone goal of the half for the Bears at 27:46 to tie it one last time, 6-6. Merchant Marine went on a five-goal run to end the game with the 11-6 final.
Sophomore goalkeeper Mary Budri had 11 saves for the Bears, while the Mariners goalkeeper Hannah Gizzi had five saves in the victory.
The Bears are back in action on Saturday, March 30 at 1:00 PM when they host Emerson in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.
