Balanced Attack Sends Bears Past Blue

NEW LONDON, Conn.- Sophomore Haley Howard recorded her second hat trick of the season to lead Coast Guard women's lacrosse to a 10-7 victory over Wellesley on Wednesday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action. The Bears improve to 5-9 overall and 2-3 in the NEWMAC, while Wellesley drops to 5-9 on the season and 1-5 in conference play.

The Bears had eight different goal-scorers in the victory. Along with her three-goal performance, Howard also collected three draw controls and picked up one ground ball. Sophomore Etta Davis scored one goal and tallied one assist, also adding a game-highs with four caused turnovers and five ground balls. Freshman Maddie Rizzuto scored one goal with three helpers and four ground balls. Sophomore Haley McCue found the back of the net once, added two assists, caused two turnovers and picked up four ground balls. Classmate Luisa Santos tallied a goal and an assist. Senior Carter Sanderson, freshman Kathrine Pittman, and Emily Rivera scored a goal each in the Bears victory.

Senior Dacia Persky scored a game-high four goals to lead the Blue. Classmate Olivia Strobl scored one goal and two assists and freshman Izzy Burdick and sophomore Eleanor Mallett tallied a goal each in the loss for Wellesley.

McCue found Howard at 26:38 to put the Bears on the board first. Persky netted her first of the game just four minutes later. Davis and McCue scored back-to-back goals in under a minute to give the Bears a two-goal lead, 3-1. Mallett answered at 9:57 to bring the Blue within one, 3-2 but Howard scored two more, to extend the Bears lead 5-2 with seven minutes remaining in the half. Wellesley scored three unanswered goals to end the half with a 5-5 tie.

Sanderson opened the second half with her goal at 25:54 to give the Bears a 6-5 lead. Persky answered to tie it once more at 19:22. Pittman and Santos added two more for the Bears in under a minute to give Coast Guard an 8-6 lead. Strobl scored the final goal for the Blue at 16:17, cutting Wellesley's deficit, 8-7. Rivera and Rizzuto scored the last two goals of the game at 5:40 and 2:35 to give the Bears the 10-7 final.

Coast Guard held a 26-19 advantage in ground balls and a 10-9 advantage in draw controls.

Sophomore Mary Budri made five saves in the victory and improves to 4-8 on the season. Freshman Lorna Li made 12 saves in the loss for the Blue.

The Bears are back in action on Saturday, April 20 when they host Mount Holyoke at 12:00 PM.
