McClave, Remke Survive Day One; Earn All-America Honors

CLEVELAND, Ohio  --  Sophomore Owen McClave and junior Nick Remke each won three of four matches to remain alive and secure All-America honors in their debuts at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships.

McClave opened with a 5-3 win over Brenden Velez from Delaware Valley before suffering a 1-0 loss to fourth-seeded Sam Bennyhoff from Augsburg.

He then recorded a 12-2 major decision over Nolan Wochna from Mount Union to remain alive.

McClave then assured himself of earning All-America honors with a thrilling 2-1  win in a tiebreaker over Tito Colom from Ithaca. McClave will wrestle top-seeded Troy Stanich from Stevens on Saturday. He can finish no lower than eighth and the top eight earn All-America honors.

Remke was beaten by third-seeded Anthony Arroyo from Baldwin Wallace 7-1 before he bounced back with a 10-5 decision over Blake Dixon from John Carroll.

Remke then earned a 5-2 decision over Nicholas Bonomo from Wisconsin-Whitewater before he pinned seventh-seeded Taylor Shay from Roger Williams, the Northeast Region champion, in 6:53 to assure All-America honors. Remke was trailing by one point before recording the huge pin.

Shay beat Remke 3-1 during the regular and 5-4 in the semifinals of the Northeast Regional this season. He will wrestle Ben Hewson from Cornell College on Saturday.

A pair of Bears saw their NCAA Championship run come to an end on Friday.

Sophomore AJ Aeberli won a 5-3 decision over Joseph Sindoni from York (Pa.) before dropping a 7-3 decision to second-seeded Jairod James from Mount Union. Aeberli was eliminated with a 7-5 loss to Tanner Vassar from Augsburg.

Freshman Jonathan Wagner was beaten 7-3 by Antavian Leary from Ferrum before recorded a 21-4 tech. fall over Drew Kasper from Otterbein. He saw his NCAA Championships come to an end with a 5-1 loss to Hasan Alic from York (Pa.).
