Bears Receive Votes in AVCA Preseason Top 25 Poll

NEW LONDON, Conn.--The Coast Guard Academy volleyball team received 11 votes in the 2012 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III Top 25 preseason poll.


Last year, the Bears won the ECAC New England Championship and finished 26-6 overall and won a share of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season championship with an 8-1 record in conference play.

Coast Guard returns every starter from a year ago led by a trio of all-conference performers, junior Kelsey DePorto, a first team selection and seniors Keriann Mason and Karen Matic, who were both named to the NEWMAC second team last year.

The Bears will open the season at the very tough Elmhurst tournament against three teams that are ranked in the top 15 in the AVCA preseason poll. Coast Guard will open the season against host and #11 Elmhurst on August 31st at 3 p.m. before taking on #15 Chicago at 9 p.m. On day two of the tournament, Coast Guard will play St. Norbert at 10 a.m. and #12 Carthage at noon, all times are listed are EST.
