NEW LONDON, Conn.-- Coast Guard volleyball split a pair of matches on the second day of the CGA/Conn. College Tournament. The Bears defeated DeSales 3-0 in the opening match of the day and fell 3-0 to Tufts in the final. Coast Guard is now 5-3 on the season.
Coast Guard 3, DeSales 0
Freshman Noelle Tursky led the Bears with a match-high eight kills, eight digs, and six assists as Coast Guard defeated DeSales in three, 25-17, 25-12, 25-22. . Senior Angelou Dunton added five kills with two digs.
Diane Pugay and Morghan Shoemaker led the Bulldogs with seven kills each. Audrey Wolfe added 26 assists and Cristal Fernandez had 16 digs for DeSales.
With the scored tied 12-12 in the first set, the Bears used four more points to hold the lead over DeSales and take a 25-17 victory.
The Bears scored five straight points to begin the second set and never trailed again as they extended their lead to a 25-12 victory.
DeSales took an 8-2 lead to begin the third set but the Bears tied it up at 11-11. Coast Guard took the lead and finished at 25-22 to secure the 3-0 win over DeSales.
Tufts 3, Coast Guard 0
Maddie Stewart tallied a match-high 12 kills as Tufts defeated Coast Guard in three sets, 29-27, 25-20, 25-14.
Brigid Bell added eight kills with 16 digs and Rachel Furash had a match-high 23 assists for the Jumbos.
Tursky had a team-high 10 kills with 16 assists, Martin contributed with a team-high 17 assists, and Hine added a team-high 13 digs for the Bears.
The Bears had the first lead of the set at 11-7 but Tufts rallied back, taking a 16-14 lead. Tursky had a kill to tie the game 18-18 as both teams battled through but Tufts ended the first set with two kills to take a 29-17 win in the first set.
Coast Guard tied the match at 20-20 with a kill from Tursky but Tufts scored the final five points of the match for their second victory of the set, 25-20.
Tufts held the Bears to just a three point lead throughout the beginning of the third set but the Jumbos used a five point run to extend their lead and bring them to their final victory of the day, 25-14.
The Bears are back in action on Thursday, September 12 on the road as they travel to rival Merchant Marine for a 6:00 PM match.
