Bears Picked Sixth in NEWMAC Preseason Coaches' Poll

BOSTON, Mass. – The Bears, who will look to improve upon their eighth place at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship, have been picked sixth in the NEWMAC Preseason Coaches' Poll.

Coast Guard tied for sixth in the poll with Mount Holyoke with 66 points. They are only two points behind the fifth place team Smith.

The Bears must replace their top runner, Beth Gollin, but return the other four runners who scored at the conference meet last season. Senior Carolyn Smith (32nd), junior Jenn Haley (41st), senior Andrea Barrameda (42nd) and sophomore Maral Toukhanian (45th) are all back for the Bears along with sophomore Rachel Burchill, who also ran at the regional championship last season. The Bears will also be looking for several talented freshman to break  into the top seven this season.

After claiming the programs 8th consecutive NEWMAC crown in 2014, MIT has been selected as the preseason favorite with nine first place votes and 109 total points. 

2014 runner-ups, Wellesley, came in second with two first place vote and 98 total, WPI took third with 84 while Wheaton (Mass.) took fourth with 74 points. Round out the remaining slots was #5 Smith (68), #T6 Mount Holyoke (66), #8 Springfield (50), #9 Babson (38), #10 Clark (31) and #11 Emerson (21).
